About our project...

For the last few weeks of Term 4 and the first 5 weeks in Term 5, we will be working on a collaborative project with a group of adults and the staff at Beulah Resource Base. Each Wednesday for the first 4 weeks of June we will be producing work in workshops at BRB and The BRIT School , then we will spend the remainder of the week in school working on the material created and gathered to produce work for the final event. There will be a Celebration day in week 5 (Wednesday 6thJuly) at BRB where we will share our outcomes.

A SENSE OF ME: Aim of project: To create sensory installations at BRB exploring memories and/or ambitions of the adults. Between workshops students will be developing the animations and other material towards the sensory installations.

My First Visit To Beulah.

I waited in the foyer, and as soon as the adults entered there was a burst of energy and happiness and you could see this was a place that they enjoy and where we would be welcomed.

The adults were extremely friendly and shook all our hands and wanted to know about us, we could see that each of the adults were so different and each had strong and interesting personalities, I look forward to getting to know them one to one and enriching my knowledge of how they live.

MY FIRST EXPERIENCE

My first experience visiting Beulah Family Church was a mixture of emotions. I was excited but at the same time slightly scared of meeting the clients we were working with, as I didn't know how they would react to me. When I got there the environment was warm and friendly. Everyone was open and willing to talk and introduce themselves to me.

I was surprised to see how open they were to talk to me about their lives, what they enjoyed and various other things about themselves. Their warm handshakes made me intrigued to find out more about them.

They were like a little family; everyone looked happy and excited for the events that were installed for the day.

I really enjoyed meeting them as it was a chance for me to get to know them and also get a brief outline of their characters.

Approaching them was kind of hard, as some gave you straight answers while others were willing to have a conversation with you, from reality to their imaginations.

I can’t wait to go back there as I will feel more open myself, even though I am slightly still nervous as I still don’t know what to expect later on, the environment and warmness has put me on a good stepping stone.

First Visit

I had the most wonderful time at Beulah. I probably haven't felt that happy in a very long time.
When first walking into the room, i was shocked to see how many of the adult wished to shake hands with me, each handshake gave me a buzz of happiness and made me feel extremely welcome into this environment. This then gave me the confidence to get to know each of the happy, enthusiastic adults. But at first i stood at the back of the room, right by a coat hanger, a women then walked up to me, asking to put her bag and coat on the coat hanger, i moved politely, to find that this women didn't just want to place her bag near the hanger but also to meet me. It made me feel young again, when everyone is on the same level and everyone just wants to have fun, drawing, playing with puzzles and just simply talking about what we like, what makes us most happy. I just want to go back, to go back to see these beautiful happy people.
It was really upsetting to then hear that they were sometimes not given the opportunities, that we had been given just because they were disabled, when they were very capable of moving, helping out and just generally doing everyday actions. But it was nice to here that some of then were learning how to cook or volunteer working.
I can't wait to go back.

How My Morning was at Beulah

I found that the adults that we met were very welcoming and friendly. The atmosphere was nice and so were the people.

My First Day at Beulah.

As I walked in to the main room from the lobby, I felt anxious and I didn’t know how to react or what to expect, as I have never worked or been around adults with learning difficulties before. I was welcomed by the working members from the Beulah company and class mates. We were told to go and introduce ourselves to the adults, I felt a bit insecure and uncomfortable at this point so it took me longer to approach the adults of Beulah than anyone else, because I didn’t know how to go about talking to them. I looked around and watched how the adults were reacting to new company and also the obliviousness of some of them. It was interesting to see how each member of their group had their own individual role or space in the room, some were walking about, where as some were in one spot concentrating more on what they were doing, than on anything else. I then got myself up and went to say hello to a lady sitting down, I was pretty nervous and anxious as to how she was going to react to me saying hello. As I went around the once challenging task seemed easier and I started to take in and enjoy and appreciate being with the adults of Beulah. When we had all settled down and been talking to them I became really interested in the stories some were telling and learning more about them in weeks to come. I know am extremely excited but still and bit nervous about this project, but feel as if this project will be amazing and cannot wait to meet them all again.

My first experience at the Beulah Resource Base

My first experience at the Beulah resource base was alot more extreme than i thought it would be, i thought it would be a day where we would just come in and see the clients but instead it was alot more interactive; the clients there were extremely friendly and really nice, they would shake your hand and say hello and then straight away go off and do whatever they wanted or felt like doing, they were very independent and always curious to what everyone else was doing. Overall the first trip there was kind of surreal and a new experience to me.

Visiting Beulah

Waiting in the lobby my mind was filled with scenarios and I was slightly anxious to meet the members of Beulah. I believe my doubts and anxiety stemmed from uncertainty and never working with or for adults with learning difficulties. Entering Beulah resource base I was immediately welcomed and overwhelmed by how friendly and confident the adults were with new people. Interacting with many of the adults wasn't difficult as they had many stories and things to share, however some were quite challenging to hold a conversation with as some didn't enjoy communication or preferred to use different ways of communication for example drawing. I love the different characters and how unique and individual the adults are, also how they are treated as individuals. Leaving Beulah my initial thoughts have seriously changed. I'm extremely excited about working alongside Beulah as the adults are amazing. I believe this experience will provide me with knowledge and a greater understanding of people with learning difficulties.

Jen: First visit to Beulah.

At first we were all slightly apprehensive about entering a new environment; however it didn’t take me long to feel confident within the surroundings. I loved meeting everyone, and letting them tell me stories and get involved with various activities. Today was definitely an insight into various difficulties the adults face, I’m interested to learn more about autism, Down syndrome and other learning disabilities as I found it interesting observing the range of abilities within the group, some more capable, and others that would go off on a tangent about other topics.
I felt the relaxed approach to the visit worked well, it meant we were able to talk to everyone in our own time and they were able to talk openly with us. I don’t think a structured activity would’ve been successful due to the way some of them respond to change in their daily schedule, I feel it’s important for us to adapt to their environment rather than imposing on their day to day activities, it will also prove to be more of a challenge for us, as we start to put together our installation plans.
Overall I felt it was a positive and loving environment to be in and I’m looking forward to returning and getting to know everyone a bit better.

Adobe Flash lesson

Inspiration - Decode

V&A Interactive digital art.
This amazing exhibition at the V&A uses digital technology to create an interactive art show. Decode has visual communication at its core and really gets people interacting with the art, and allowing people to have a hands on approach to all the art pieces. In a sense a lot of the pieces allow the visitors to create the art as their actions and movements produce the outcome.

Using flash

This week I was taught how to use Adobe flash and how to use motion tweens. My first thoughts of using flash were that it is hard but after getting used to it, it was very easy to carry on developing. The animations we will create will be a great way of showing parts of the narrative that we perhaps wouldnt be able to create in real life as part of the sensory installation. It can set the scene, add additional characters, showing large objects like buildings, planes, trains etc. This is going to be a really important part in telling the stories of the adults we will be working with.

My first Flash animation

This week i learnt about Flash Animation, about how to create motion tweens and how to draw. We are going to use this process to create animations with and about the adults at BRB. I am really looking forward to developing my skills further and turning the narratives into animations.

Jen: Initial thoughts.

It’s understandable to feel apprehensive about working with a new group of people within the community. Personally I feel more excited about the opportunities it will bring. I’m looking forward to the challenges I will face and meeting new people.

I’m also eager to begin working with a different group of students at Brit. The classes have been integrated and so it’ll give us a chance to get to know each other better, this will enable us to work well collectively throughout the project.

Having found out that we’ll be using Flash Animation I’m a little nervous as I have no previous experience in using this technique. Although I’m sure it’ll be interesting to learn something new, and come out with a final piece with an entirely different look to my personal style of Textile design.

Overall, I’m excited to begin this community project and I’m looking forward to seeing what are group are capable of when working together with Beulah.

Using Adobe Flash CS3

For the introduction of our project our first lesson was a practice with Adobe Flash CS3. At the beginning I was slightly confused with how to create an animation, but then after asking for help I understood what I was going to do.

In the time we had I was able to learn basic steps to how to create my own animation using this software. I was able to see my animation come alive in front of my eyes, from choosing an image to work with, to using the line tool to draw around the image, to adding the animation effect.

This mini lesson gave me an insight to how to incorporate this into our community project. By adding animation in my project will make it fun and exciting to watch a projection relating the partner I will be assigned to.

My Introduction and Initial Experience With Adobe Flash.

This project is a new and exciting experience for me, We will be working with adults with severe learning difficulties which will be a new and challenging experience for me, the other aspect of the project which will be out of my comfort zone and a lot of hard work will be working with animation, I am not familiar with or usually have much luck with computer technology and programmes.

On Monday 9th May we had an introductory tutorial to the animation software “Adobe Flash”. We were firstly shown some examples of the kind of animations that can be produced on Flash, we were then taught step by step how to create a simple animation of a ball bouncing; we created 2 layers, one with a ball drawn and one with a floor drawn, we then right clicked the ball and turned it into a “Symbol” , in the first frame the ball is on the ground , we then right clicked on 10 seconds on the timeline and inserted a key frame , in this frame the ball is in the air , the last step is to right click between the two frames and create a “Motion Tween” this creates the movement between the ball in the air and the ground , this can be repeated many times or put on a loop.

Our second task was to create a drawing of our self, we imported a front shot photo of our self, to create the shapes of our faces we us the line tool and bended them in shape, when all the features were created we filled in colours and hid the original photo layer, I then used the same technique as the bouncing ball and created me blinking.

These skilled that I have learned I feel could be used when working with the adults at Beulah Recourse Base, we could use the face drawing technique to possibly personalise the animations, have drawings of the adults we are working with speaking or having thought bubbles etc. to tell their stories.

Initial thoughts

I initially didn’t know what to think of this project or what it had in store for me, as I have never created a piece of community art. However I’m extremely excited, as this is a new experience for me. I will be working alongside Beulah; Beulah resource base is a place for adults with severe learning difficulties to go and take part in a wide range of activities to stimulate their physical and creative development.

As this was a new experience for many, the project started with three lessons based around community art and design. I found the lessons extremely useful and they gave me an insight into community art and how it works. I have learnt that community art and design thrives on contact between artists and the community they are working with. This is art making with, and for the benefit of a community. Now that I have researched community art in depth I’m more comfortable with the project and what it involves.

My initial thoughts on the project.

When I found out about our new project, I was quite anxious and didn’t know what to expect, the thought of working with adults with learning difficulties scared me. As we found out more about this project I became more and more interested and excited. I feel it will be a great experience that will be full of new lessons and memories.

The first session we had was one with 3 teachers talking and showing us about community art projects, this was very useful because it helped me to understand what community art is and how to go about doing a community art project. The teachers showed us already existing community art projects and how community work can be interactive as well. This was interesting because we learnt about different ways to teach children or adults with learning difficulties something new through using a range of teaching strategies.

We then had short discussion about what we going to be doing with the adults and what we can do in our final collaborative piece, after this I became even more excited and now cant wait to meet them and start what will be a life changing project.

1st thoughts

When starting this project, I had no idea what I was getting into. The whole idea of working along side a community group that I wouldn’t usually be surrounded by, felt like jumping in a pool, without knowing how to swim. We had our first lesson on learning a bit about whom we will be working with, this was a lot of help because I felt now I was able to join in. Working on a sensory installation and dwelling in the beauty of animation, sounds like a lot of fun, but working with a new friend to create this collaborate art, tops it off.

Welcome to our blog....

This blog is going to be a diary/sketchbook documenting our thoughts on and progress of our collaborative project with Beulah Resource Base entitled 'A Sense of Me'. We are extremely excited about beginning the project and can't wait to see what we create together...
